Remasters, Remakes, and What Exactly You Should Log
By Playlogs
Catalog categories exist for a reason. When to log the remake vs the original — and how to avoid duplicate diary clutter.
Remasters, remakes, and your diary
Playlogs inherits IGDB categories: remake, remaster, port, and main game are different catalog rows for a reason.
Remaster vs remake (practical version)
- Remaster — same game, sharper presentation, quality-of-life; often the version to log if that’s what you played
- Remake — rebuilt experience; treat it as its own Completed entry even if you finished the original years ago
Avoid double-counting guilt
You do not owe the original a Completed log because you beat the remake. Log what you actually booted. If you replayed both, two logs are correct — different experiences, different dates.
Ports and platforms
If you finished a game on Switch and later on PC, one Completed log with a platform note is usually enough unless the port meaningfully changes the feel (performance, controls, multiplayer).
Bundles and GotY editions
Prefer the main game entry for ratings when possible, and mention the edition in notes. Bundles clutter averages when people rate a compilation like a single campaign.
Use category filters when browsing (main_game) so remasters don’t drown discovery — then log the exact edition you played so your history stays precise.
