EA and Bit Reactor’s single-player turn-based tactics game hits PC and consoles the same day as MGS Vol. 2 and Plague Tale Legacy. Why the XCOM fantasy matters, and who should pick a different day-one.
Star Wars Zero Company
Releases August 27, 2026 — PC, PS5, Xbox Series (commonly previewed around the $50 price point). Developed by Bit Reactor, published under EA’s Star Wars umbrella, Zero Company is a single-player turn-based tactics campaign set in the twilight of the Clone Wars: elite squads, cover discipline, investigation-flavored ops, and a cinematic original story that has teased familiar era faces without promising another saber-platformer.
If your Star Wars wish list was “give me XCOM in this galaxy,” this is the SKU. If your wish list was “more Fallen Order movement,” keep walking.
Why a tactics Star Wars game is overdue
Most modern Star Wars games sell kinetic fantasy — parkour, blasters-as-rhythm, hero power fantasy. Tactics sells something the Clone Wars actually dramatize well: squads under bad odds, terrain as destiny, one bad activation cascading into a funeral.
That only works if missions vary, if tools change decisions (not just skins), and if the campaign respects session length. A tactics game where every op is a 45-minute identical grid will die in week two no matter how good the armor textures are.
What to judge after the first act (not after the tutorial)
- Mission variety vs repetitive skirmish templates
- Whether Star Wars toys change the decision tree or only the flavor text
- Difficulty modes that welcome genre newcomers without deleting challenge for veterans
- UI clarity on gamepad — tactics lives or dies in menus
- Week-one balance: overtuned enemies are common; wait for a few patches before a final verdict
August 27 is crowded
Same-day launches include:
- Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 — archival holy grail for MGS4 / Peace Walker
- Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy — story-action prequel, Game Pass called out in many calendars
Pick one primary. Buying all three on day one is how you finish none before Wolverine season.
Who should play it
If the fantasy is the grid — planning, cover, squad losses that sting — you’re the audience. If you only wanted glow and trailers, enjoy the marketing and spend August 27 on Legacy or the Metal Gear collection instead.
Form a score after a dozen real missions, not after the training map.
