What are the aspects of the work of Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach (1714-1788) which prevent him from being forgotten, which reach beyond his individual compositions and which exercised an influence on other composers and on the development of a genre? 0Contemporaries praised him in such hymn-like words as those attributed to W.A. Mozart, "He is the father, we are the boys. Any of us who can do anything right has learnt it from him." A growth in the number of academic studies has brought C.P.E. Bach?s significance for music history more clearly into focus. To mark the anniversary an international conference took place in Leipzig, where Bach specialists, art historians, theologians and Germanists approached important areas of Bach?s creative work from different perspectives. The results have now been made available for further study and constitute a milestone in the history of Bach studies.
