I tell in this book of some of the experiences of forty years. I have tried to be entirely frank in presenting an unexaggerated picture of the realities of detective life. Apart from any general interest these memoirs may possess, it is my hope that they may afford some instruction and guidance, in not too indigestible a form, to the younger members of my profession. - Preface.
