After years of training under his guardian Peresvet, young Philipp returns to his hometown of Turov. He dreams of joining the local prince's retinue, becoming a mighty warrior. But upon arriving, Philipp finds a depressing sight: the principality has lost its former glory, the people are gripped by fear, and pagans have settled in the forests, offering prayers to an ancient, long-forgotten deity and performing human sacrifices.
