In order to save money, you move into a cheap yet unnervingly quiet old apartment building. Narrow hallways, dim yellow lights, corners that never quite dry—everything feels as if it has been waiting for you. At first, it’s nothing more than a feeling: Someone is watching you. No matter how hard you try to ignore it, that gaze clings to your back, seeps through the walls, and lurks just outside your line of sight.
